Humidor humidity and storage: a practical reference
How relative humidity, temperature, calibration and storage stability affect premium cigar condition.
Stability matters more than chasing a perfect number
Premium cigars are hygroscopic: they exchange moisture with the surrounding air. A humidor is intended to keep that environment relatively stable so the tobacco does not repeatedly dry out and reabsorb moisture. Large swings can be more troublesome than a small difference between two reasonable humidity targets.
Many cigar owners keep humidors somewhere in the mid-to-upper 60% relative-humidity range, while some prefer slightly higher or lower conditions depending on climate, storage container and personal preference. There is no single setting that makes every cigar perform identically.
Temperature changes the picture
Relative humidity is temperature-dependent, so a humidity reading should not be considered in isolation. Heat can also accelerate deterioration and increase the risk of tobacco beetle activity. A cool, stable indoor location away from direct sun and heating vents is generally easier to manage than a space with strong daily temperature swings.
A sealed plastic container, wooden humidor and cabinet all react differently to room conditions. The tighter the seal, the slower the internal environment tends to change.
Hygrometer accuracy is easy to overlook
A digital hygrometer can be consistently wrong by several percentage points. Before changing humidification because of a single reading, it is useful to verify or calibrate the instrument using a known reference method or a second trusted meter.
Placement also matters. A sensor touching a humidification source can read differently from one positioned among the cigars. Large humidors may have different conditions at the top and bottom.
Short-term storage without a traditional humidor
For temporary storage, a clean airtight food-safe container paired with an appropriately sized two-way humidity pack can provide a stable environment. The container should be odor-free because tobacco can absorb surrounding aromas. Cigars should not be placed in direct contact with liquid water or a wet sponge.
